Graduate Admission to the University of Georgia is a collaborative process involving the Graduate School and the graduate faculty of the University. Each department has a designated graduate coordinator who serves as a liaison between the department and the Graduate School and who provides detailed information about program entry requirements, resources and special opportunities.
Persons holding a baccalaureate degree, or a foreign equivalent, from a regionally accredited institution are eligible to apply for admission to the Graduate School. Regional accreditation is obtained from the following organizations:
Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA)
Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA)
New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (NEASC-CIHE)

Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities (WASC-ACSCU)
This requirement does not apply to University of Georgia undergraduates in linked bachelors-masters degree programs.
Application for admission to the Graduate School may be filed in an electronic on-line application. All applicants must provide an active e-mail address for contact regarding application processing.

Certificate of Finances
All international applicants recommended for admission must show proof of finances. Once recommended, you will receive an email with more information on requesting visa documents and submitting your proof of finances to the Office of International Education.

Country-Specific Academic Credentials and Requirements
The following terminology is used in this section and holds the meaning described below:
Academic Transcript: Official records of courses, credit, and grades earned while studying at the college, university or educational institution. The academic transcript or record is issued by the institution. Some academic transcripts also indicate clearly the academic degree earned and date that the degree was awarded. If they do not have official information about the academic degree that has been conferred, a separate proof of degree is required. (see Tips)
Proof of Degree: The official academic record of the institution that clearly indicates the academic degree that has been earned along with date conferred. This document displays the student’s name, as well. (see Tips)
Recognized Institution: Higher-level educational institution that is recognized in the country by the appropriate government agency or accrediting agency as is approved to award degrees.
Issuing Institution: This terminology means that the records must show that they were prepared by the educational institution where the degree and coursework were earned.
Certification versus Notarization: Certification means that a representative of the educational institution is authorized by the institution to certify/approve copies of academic records as being official and true. Notarization is not adequate for admission purposes because the individual notary is usually a private entity, not an official representative of the institution. Note: Notarized copies are not considered official academic records. Please do not submit your original proof of degree, as we cannot return it to you.

English Language Proficiency Requirement
The University of Georgia will accept satisfactory scores on either the TOEFL or IELTS language proficiency examinations for admission to graduate programs. Test scores must be submitted directly from the testing agency.
Minimum TOEFL score requirement: overall score of 80 with at least 20 on speaking and writing
Minimum IELTS score requirement: overall band-width of 6.5, with no single band (score) below 6.0.
Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores that are not more than two years old. Applicants who have received degrees from accredited institutions in the U.S. or from institutions in countries where English is the primary language (e.g., the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand) usually are not required to submit the TOEFL (or IELTS) scores. If such an applicant received the degree more than two years prior to application to the Graduate School and has been residing/working in a country where the primary language is not English, he or she must submit current scores. Students who are currently enrolled and have been enrolled at least one year at a regionally accredited U.S. institution, may have the English language proficiency requirement waived, if their work shows a strong quality of performance. Some departments may require the TOEFL (or IELTS) regardless of previous educational experience.

Certified Translations
We do not accept evaluation reports from external evaluation agencies
The translator must be authorized to translate the original language to English
We require an original stamp and signature of the translator

Visa Documentation
Follow the suggestions below to reduce admissions delays.
Current F1 Visa Students
A copy of your I-20, I-94 and visa stamp.
If you are on OPT, include a copy of your Employment Authorization Card.
The I-20 requires your home country address. A P.O Box or university address cannot be used as your home country address. Without the home country address, we cannot prepare the I-20. Graduate Admissions will, however, mail your official acceptance letter and I-20 to the mailing address that is listed on your application for admission.
Current F2 Visa Students
A copy of your I-20, I-94 and visa stamp.
A copy of your spouse’s I-20.
Please note where you plan to change your visa, either in the US or in your home country.
Current H1 Visa Students
Please note where you obtained your H1 visa, either in the US or in your home country.
If you received the H1 visa in the US, submit a copy of your H1B approval notice, I-94 and visa stamp.
If you received the H1 visa in your home country, submit a copy of your I-94 and visa stamp.
Please note if you plan to change your H1 to F1 visa, and if so, where: in the US or in your home country.

Application Procedures
Persons seeking admission to the University of Georgia Graduate School must hold a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting association or its international equivalent prior to the expected semester of matriculation with the exception of University of Georgia undergraduate students enrolled in linked bachelors/masters programs. Applicants should be ranked in the upper half of their undergraduate class. Applicants are responsible for submitting application materials required for admission. These items include, but are not limited to, the following:

Application materials are reviewed by the Graduate School and the academic department. The Graduate School reviews the department’s recommendation and makes the final determination on acceptance. Applicants must be admitted to the Graduate School before they are eligible to register. Official acceptance is conveyed to the applicant in a formal letter issued by the Office of Graduate Admissions. Admission is granted for a specific semester and is validated by registration for that semester.

Deferring an Application
An applicant wishing to defer an application to a subsequent semester should first consult with the academic department to determine if the department admits students for that semester. An applicant may submit a one-time, e-mail request to the Office of Graduate Admissions, as long as the request occurs prior to the start of the original semester of matriculation. After the original semester of matriculation has begun, the applicant must submit a new application and application fee to defer an application to a future semester. Deferred applications are referred to the department for reconsideration and a new admissions recommendation. Academic departments may refuse admission to applicants whose files are incomplete after the beginning of the semester of expected matriculation and when the applicants have not requested deferrals to future semesters. The application and supporting documents become the property of the University and cannot be returned or forwarded elsewhere.

Communication
To expedite application processing and provide timely information, Graduate Admissions will communicate with applicants primarily by email, unless email correspondence is not possible. Notification of admissions decisions will be by official letter from the Graduate School. Applicants are encouraged to provide a web-based email address that will remain valid regardless of changes made in the internet provider services. Email addresses that are provided by applicants will be used only for the purpose of carrying out admissions business. It is important that email accounts have adequate memory and message filters need to be set appropriately to be sure that messages are not filtered from your mail-box before you can view them. Applicants should check email accounts frequently.

Transcripts and Academic Records
Transcripts for Domestic Applicants
Applicants should submit unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended as part of the online application. Unofficial transcripts not submitted as part of the online application can be emailed to gradadm@uga.edu. Official transcripts are not required during the review process and will only be required for applicants who are offered admission. Do not mail official transcripts until offered admission.
If offered admission, the Graduate School prefers electronic delivery of your transcripts from your institution via secure services such as Scrip-Safe, AVOW, Docufied and National Clearinghouse. Electronic transcripts should be sent directly to gradadm@uga.edu. If electronic delivery is not available, applicants can submit one official transcript in a sealed envelope from each institution of higher education attended, except the University of Georgia. University of Georgia transcripts are on file.

Official transcripts for these credits must be submitted. This also pertains to study abroad credit that is posted on records as transfer credit to other institutions.
Academic Records for International Applicants
Applicants should submit unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended as part of the online application. Unofficial transcripts not submitted as part of the online application can be emailed to gradadm@uga.edu. Official transcripts are not required during the review process and will only be required for applicants who are offered admission. Do not mail official transcripts until offered admission.
If offered admission, applicants must submit one official (certified) copy of academic records from each institution of higher education that the applicant has attended to the Graduate School. Official documents must bear an original certification of the appropriate school official or office. Photocopies of certified documents are not acceptable. Coursework completed at one institution but listed on the record of a second institution is not acceptable. A separate copy of the record from the first institution is required.
The records must contain the following information

If the records do not clearly indicate the subjects studied, syllabi of the courses of study must be included as part of the records. Syllabi written in English by the applicant are acceptable.
If the title of the degree and graduation date (month and year) are not indicated on the transcript, separate proof of degree (e.g., an official copy of the diploma) must also be submitted.
If the original language of the record is not English, a certified translation in English must be attached to the original. Any translated record should be a literal and not an interpretive translation.
The University reserves the right to require the receipt of official transcripts directly from the foreign institution. Additional information regarding academic credentials from selected countries may be viewed on the Country-Specific Academic Credentials and Requirements for Admission to the University of Georgia page of our website. In the list, the “bachelor’s equivalency” refers to the minimum degree(s) required and considered to be equivalent to the U.S. bachelor’s degree.

Entrance Test Scores
Entrance test scores appropriate for each application must be sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions directly by the responsible testing agency. All test scores, except the TOEFL, are subject to a five-year time limitation. Scores from the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), required of applicants whose native language is not English, are subject to a two-year time limit.
Scores on the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are required for admission as a prospective candidate for most graduate degrees. The Miller Analogies Test (MAT) may be used in lieu of scores on the GRE for admission to some Master of Education and Specialist in Education degree programs. The GMAT is required for applicants seeking admission as prospective candidates for the Master of Business Administration and the Master of Accountancy degrees. Applicants for the Master of Marketing Research and Master of Internet Technology degrees may submit either the GMAT or the GRE. The Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy programs in business administration accept the GMAT or the GRE. The Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy programs in economics require the GRE. Either the GRE or GMAT may be submitted in support of the MA in journalism and mass communication, the Master of Mass Communication (MMC), and PhD in mass communication. In all cases, applicants should consult the departments for information about specific test score requirements. Applicants who have been admitted previously to a degree program and earned credit toward that degree at the University of Georgia may submit the same test scores in support of an application for a new degree program. In this case, the scores are not subject to the five-year time limit.
UGA institutional code for ETS reporting: 5813. Please note that listing UGA (5813) as an Undergraduate Institution is NOT sufficient for ETS to send UGA a copy of the score report. You MUST list UGA (5813) as an actual Score Recipient. In addition to self-reported scores you may provide within the application, entrance test scores appropriate for each application must be sent to Graduate Admissions directly by the responsible testing agency. Unofficial scores are not acceptable. Test and sub-test requirements vary depending on major and academic department. Applicants should consult the departments for specific test requirements. The general test of the GRE is offered year-round as a computer-based test at centers worldwide. GRE subject tests and the GMAT are offered several times a year at numerous testing centers in the United States and abroad. Advance registration for tests is required.
