Our Purpose
The International Foundations Program was created to helpacademically-qualified students gain English Language Proficiency forundergraduate and graduate program admission. The International FoundationsProgram provides students planning on doing degree programs at the U of C withan on-campus program to help them achieve their academic goals. Students in theInternational Foundations Program gain fluency in their use of the Englishlanguage while learning in an academic environment which prepares them for theiruniversity studies. The program is full-time and intensive, for undergraduateand graduate students.

What is the International Foundations Program?
The International Foundations Program is a uniquely focused Englishlanguage program that prepares English as a Second Language (ESL) students foruniversity studies. It is designed especially for intermediate to advanced ESLstudents who want to learn English in a challenging and effective environmentthat trains them for academic success at the undergraduate or graduatelevel.

Implement critical thinking skills in reading, writing, listening andspeaking
Make use of effective learning strategies both inside and outside of theuniversity classroom

Instructors in the program have advanced experience and training inteaching ESL. They use an active, learner-centred communicative approach thatfocuses on helping the students themselves arrive at an understanding of theEnglish language proficiency requirements necessary for academic studies. Thisinquiry based methodology fosters research skills and initiative in the studentsin order to help them succeed at a research-intensive university like theUniversity of Calgary.
