The University of Waterloo requires the following English language scoresin addition to Grade 12 U English (or equivalent) if it is required for theprogram you are applying to.

You are not required to provide an English proficiency test score if youmeet the criteria for one of the following exceptions:
Exception A: You have been educated in Canada and you meet one of thefollowing criteria:
1.your first language is English or
2.you are a bilingual Francophone Canadian.

Exception B: Your first language is not English and your 4 most recentyears of full-time education have been taught in an entirely English-languageschool system either in Canada or in another country.

3.Official documents must arrive by the deadline.
4.English as a Second Language programs do not qualify you for thisexemption and cannot be included in the number of years of full-time educationin an English-language school system.

The following chart lists English proficiency tests that are accepted foradmission consideration. Tests that do not appear on this chart are not acceptedfor admission consideration.

Are your test scores below the requirements?
You still may be eligible for admission.
1.If your English language test scores do not meet the requirements but youmeet our academic admission requirements, you may still qualify for conditionaladmission through the Bridge to Academic Success in English (available in mostprograms, except the Faculty of Mathematics).
2.If you are applying to the Faculty of Mathematics and your English scoresare below the required levels, you may be eligible for conditional admissionthrough the English Language for Academic Studies program.

Important notes
1.Your 4 most recent years of full-time education must be immediatelybefore the beginning of the month you start your studies at Waterloo.
2.The English language requirements stated above are minimum requiredscores. Applicants with higher scores may be given preference for someprograms.
3.English language proficiency scores are considered valid if completedwithin 2 years of the date of admission assessment. Because applications areevaluated at different times throughout the admissions process, we stronglyrecommend that your test be completed on, or after, September 1, 2015 toguarantee that your test will be eligible for September 2017 admission.
If you're applying to start in January 2018, we strongly recommend thatyour test be completed on, or after, January 1, 2016.

4.Paper-based TOEFL will be considered on an individual case-by-casebasis.

6.For some programs, individual consideration may be given for an iBToverall score of 90 (writing and/or speaking of 23 or 24).
7.The University reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission ifan applicant fails to meet the minimum English language requirements for theprogram to which he or she has applied.
8.If you have completed your 4 most recent years of full-time education inan English-language school system and you also provide a failing Englishlanguage test score, the University reserves the right to withdraw your Offer ofAdmission or refuse admission.
9.The University reserves the right to request an English language testresult from any applicant.

Helpful hints
Complete your test at least 2 months before the deadline to ensure yourscores reach us in time.
It will take 4-6 weeks for your official test score to reach Waterloo.
Exemptions will not be granted because test dates have become full.
If a TOEFL test date is full, you are encouraged to register for CAEL,IELTS, or MELAB.

We require official test scores for the purposes of admission.
Test scores must be sent by the testing agency directly to the Office ofthe Registrar. Faxes and student copies of test scores are NOT accepted foradmission to Waterloo.
