1. Educational philosophy
The Department of Philosophy aims to fully investigate the fundamentalprinciples of human culture. In addition, through specialized research regardingthe diverse developments of human culture, it aims to produce graduates who arecapable of considering the roots of the various problems that we face in modernsociety. Students complete the master's and doctoral courses by completing theprescribed amount of credits and writing a thesis.

2. Educational program
This department is divided up into the five specialties of Philosophy,Ethics, History of Indian Philosophy, History of Chinese Philosophy, and ArtStudies. Students choose one of these specializations and conduct their researchunder the guidance of one advisor and several sub-advisors. Master's coursestudents must earn a total of thirty or more credits, including two credits ofthesis guidance, and also complete a master's thesis. Doctoral course studentsmust earn four credits of thesis guidance and must finish their doctoraldissertation to complete the course.

4. Basic admissions policy
When selecting students for admission, our basic policy is to selectpotential scholars who are in tune with the educational philosophy of thedepartment. For this purpose, we ask students to submit a research plan orthesis and ensure that they have the necessary expertise and language skill fora given specialty, including an oral examination.

1. Educational philosophy
The Department of History and Geography aims to cultivate people who canprovide knowledge that is indispensable for international exchange and mutualunderstanding through specialized research regarding societies – an overallpicture that includes economics, politics, and culture – that differ accordingto historical and geographical conditions. Students complete the master's anddoctoral courses by completing the prescribed amount of credits and writing athesis.

This department is divided into seven specialties: Japanese History, AsianHistory, Korean History, Archaeology, Western History, History of IslamicCivilization, and Geography. The master's course also includes the History CoreDivision Course, a cross-field educational curriculum. Students choose one ofthese specializations and conduct their research under the guidance of oneadvisor and several sub-advisors. We hope that this process willcultivate the sense to recognize the diverse nature of the human spirit, logic,and the ability to think.

Vigorous exchange is taking place including overseas tripsand training undertaken by teaching staff, visits by foreign researchers,student foreign exchange, and the acceptance of exchange students from othercountries. In addition, foreign teaching staff members are carrying outeducation and research in the fields of English Linguistics and Literature ,Chinese Literature, French Literature, and German Literature.

In addition, the History Core Division Course of the Graduate School ofHumanities deepens academic exchange between teaching staff and students throughthe Consortium for the Study of East Asian History. This Consortium is made upof Peking University, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Shandong University,East China Normal University, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences HistoryResearch Center in China; Pusan National University, Chonbuk NationalUniversity, Dong-A University and the Academy of Korean Studies NortheastInstitute of Ancient History in Korea; and the Sainsbury Institute for the Studyof Japanese Arts and Cultures in the United Kingdom.
