Scholarships for privately-financed international students
The information on this page is for privately financed internationalstudents who are currently studying at Kyoto University and who wish to applyfor scholarships.
Only those who have "College Student" status of residence are eligible toapply for or receive scholarships for international students. Scholarshiprecipients who change their residence status to any status other than "CollegeStudent" will immediately lose their right to receive the scholarship, and mustrefund the scholarship money for the month in which their status of residencechanged.
Please note that a few scholarships are available for prospective studentswho have already passed the entrance examination and are intending to enter theuniversity. Please contact the relevant faculty and graduate schooladministration offices for further information on scholarships that can beapplied for through the university.

Scholarships Available to Privately Financed International Students atKyoto University
There are two types of scholarships available to Kyoto University students:those which are applied for through the university, and those which are appliedfor directly to the institutions providing scholarships. Applicationrequirements vary among scholarships, so students are advised to read theapplication guidebooks carefully. Notice that the selection processes forscholarships are very competitive since the financial resources of thescholarship programs are limited, and the number of applicants isincreasing.
Announcements regarding scholarships received by the University are usuallydistributed to all applicable faculties/graduate schools. The administrationoffices generally give notices to students on their bulletin boards. Studentswho wish to apply for these scholarships are advised to pay close attention tothe notices posted by their faculty/graduate school offices.

Scholarships Which May Be Applied for After Entrance to the University
・ Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship (DomesticSelection)
Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarships are funded by theMinistry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan.There are three ways to apply for such scholarships: embassy recommendation,university recommendation and domestic selection. Pre-arrival applicationsshould be made through the embassy recommendation or the universityrecommendation. The domestic selection option is only available to privatelyfinanced students currently studying at a university in Japan.
Applications should be submitted through the university, which will selectcandidates to recommend to MEXT. Applications are generally accepted in October.Successful applicants receive the scholarship from April of the following year.For details, please inquire at the administration office of your faculty orgraduate school after entering Kyoto University.

Example: An applicant who is enrolled as a research student at the time ofhis/her application and who expects to be enrolled in the master's program onthe forthcoming April 1 would be eligible to receive the scholarship for twoyears (the usual number of years required to complete the program).
Example: An applicant who is a first-year doctoral student at the time ofhis/her application and who still move up to the second-year on the forthcomingApril1 would be eligible to receive the scholarship for two years since thestudent will have already completed the first year of the three-year doctoralprogram.

Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship (Gakushushoreihi)
Privately financed international students studying at a university in Japanare eligible to apply for an honors scholarship offered by the Japan StudentServices Organization (JASSO). As of April 2015, undergraduate student awardeesand graduate student awardees receive 48,000 yen per month. Applications aregenerally accepted following admission to the university.

Scholarships from Private Foundations
The application process for scholarships from private foundations varies.Some can be made directly by individual students, and some must be made throughthe applicant's university.
Each year, Kyoto University selects and recommends internationalscholarship candidates to approximately 50 private foundations based on anintra-university selection process. Each organization commonly offers ascholarship of between 30,000 yen and 180,000 yen per month to one or twostudents. Applications are generally accepted following admission to theuniversity. (A few scholarships accept pre-entrance applications fromprospective students who have already passed the entrance examination and areintending to enter the university.)
Currently enrolled students who wish to apply for such scholarships areadvised to regularly check the bulletin boards etc. of their faculty or graduateschool for announcements. Please note that some of the scholarships requireapplicants to have a certain level of Japanese language ability.
