Compared to other parts of Japan, the island of Hokkaido is particularlyblessed by nature. In addition to a World Heritage Site, Hokkaido also has sixnational parks, a World Geopark, five quasinational parks, and 12 nature parks.The total area of these parks is approximately 870 thousand hectares, making upapproximately 11% of the entire area of Hokkaido (excluding the NorthernTerritories). Hokkaido also boasts a total of 12 wetlands attracting a vastarray of birdlife. Covered with approximately 70% forest, an area which accountsfor roughly one quarter of the national total, Hokkaido’s rich forests arerepresentative of Japan’s wooded areas.

Hokkaido is blessed with a superb naturalenvironment abundant in fresh air, pure water, vast green spaces and anextraordinary diversity of wildlife.

As Japan’s largest agricultural producer, Hokkaido is utilizing itsabundant land resources to undertake large scale agricultural developmentfocused on rice and dairy farming. Such development makes the most of Hokkaido’scool climate and low rainfall, and promotes clean agriculture which minimizesthe use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

Both Sapporo as well as Hakodate provide an excellent quality of life and acost of living more reasonable compared with other major cities in Japan. Yourbudget will depend on the lifestyle you choose to lead (eating in restaurants orcooking at home, living in private accommodation or in University dormitories).Generally with tuition costs included, you should budget for 1,500,000 yen peryear (US$16,000).
