1.Visa
Successful applicants must obtain a “College Student” visa to enter Japanas short-term exchange students. To obtain the “College Student” visa, you needto submit the “Application for Certificate of Eligibility for the Status ofResidence.” We can process your visa application only after you have beenaccepted to the University of Tsukuba and after we confirm all of yourdocuments, including financial documents. That is why it is of utmost importancethat you correctly complete the “Application for certificate of eligibility”before sending it to us. Please read the “sample” when you fill in theforms.

2.Airport Transportation from Narita Airport or Haneda Airport
Express buses are available from Narita Airport or Haneda Airport to thecentral part of Tsukuba Science City, where the University of Tsukuba islocated. It takes about two hours from Narita Airport or Haneda Airport to theTsukuba Center Bus Terminal.

3.Housing
The University of Tsukuba will make efforts to secure residence halls forsuccessful applicants. You do not need to submit any documents to us beforearriving to Tsukuba. The University will assign a room for each exchangestudent.Please note that when you move into a university residence hall, youneed to pay a deposit of 30,000 yen.
*You do not necessarily live in a room of a residence hall. If you findaccommodation by yourself, please let us know it immediately.

4.Orientations
Upon arrival in Tsukuba, you are required to attend orientations regardingforeign resident registration, course registration procedures, student healthinsurance, life in Tsukuba, and other useful matters.

5.Japanese language
Since most of the class instruction and research guidance is given inJapanese, a sufficient knowledge of Japanese is essential to pursue your studyor research in Japan. Therefore, you are strongly recommended to study Japanesebefore coming to Japan.
Every semester, the CEGLOC offers 15-week courses of Japanese forinternational students. The courses for graduate students are 10 weeks.

6.Academic advisor
A faculty member of an appropriate college will be appointed to eachexchange student as their academic advisor. These advisors will work closelywith students and provide necessary information, academic assistance, and othersupport.

7.Tutor
A student of the University of Tsukuba will be assigned as a tutor to eachincoming international student to assist them in the study of the Japaneselanguage, studies related to their academic field, and various kinds ofprocedures.

8.Advisory services
Advisory services are available at the International Student Center.International students who are confronted with problems in academic matters,human relations, finances, and other everyday matters are welcome to seekguidance from experienced advisors.

9.Japanʼs National Health Insurance plan
All international students must enroll in Japanʼs National Health Insuranceplan. The premiums are about 20,000 yen for a year. This plan will cover seventy(70) percent of incurred medical costs.

10.Estimated costs of attending the University of Tsukuba
You must have a solid financial basis to live and study in a foreigncountry. The following table provides the estimated average costs of studyingand living in Tsukuba, including books and supplies, tuition fees, healthinsurance, and other necessary expenses.
