Undergraduate scholarships
1.Dr John Birch Music Scholarship (2017)
The University of Sussex is delighted to honour its much loved former musiclecturer and organist Dr John Birch (1929-2012), with these named scholarshipsto support talented musicians (choral, organ and other instrumentalists) tocontinue to develop and perform while studying at Sussex. These are open to allfull-time undergraduate and postgraduate students, whether or not they arestudying for a Music degree.
The scholarships will each be paid in two instalments of £400 in October2017 and March 2018.
1.John Birch 音乐奖学金(2017)

Eligibility
In order to be considered for a Dr John Birch Music Scholarship you mustmeet all of the following criteria:
Be Grade 8 or equivalent in a chosen instrument
Undertake an audition at Sussex
The applicant must have accepted an offer to study at the University ofSussex, or already be a registered student at the University.
Application procedure
Candidates should submit a personal statement (max. 500 words) alongsidethe attached application form. Applications will be ranked and assessed based onhow applicants propose to develop their musical career whilst at Sussex.

19 May 2017 - Deadline for all applications to be received (23:59 BST)
31 May 2017 - Auditions to be held at Sussex
31 May 2017 - Successful applicants to be notified
October 2017/March 2018 - Scholar receives award payment instalments.

2.Long Stayers Scholarship (2017)
There are two awards available which consist of a fee waiver and a £3000cash award which will be paid in three instalments per year, £1000 per term.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the award you will:
be legally resident in the UK, have been granted Leave to Remain in the UKand do not qualify for funding from Student Finance England; or
have been granted Discretionary Leave to Remain (DLR) or some other form oftemporary status as a result of an asylum or human rights application; or
are an asylum seeker or the partner / dependant of an asylum seeker
have received an offer of a conditional or unconditional place on a fulltime undergraduate degree programme at the University of Sussex, excludingcourses at Brighton and Sussex Medical School
have not already obtained a degree or degree equivalent qualification fromanother Institution
have not met the eligibility criteria for funding from Student FinanceEngland
have a household income of less than £42,875
remain on the programme for which the scholarship is offered

You will need to upload the following information with your applicationform as proof of eligibility.
copies of documentation confirming your visa or asylum status (letter orBiometric Residence Permit Card)
proof of your household income. E.g. P60, payslips, benefit notificationletters, self-employed accounts etc.

The payments of the cash award will be made at the start of December,February and May.

3.Sussex Excellence Scholarships (2017)
The Sussex Excellence Scholarship is a merit-based award recognising, andrewarding, undergraduate students who achieved excellent academic performancebefore joining the University.
The Sussex Excellence Scholarship is worth £3,000 in Year One of a three orfour year undergraduate degree:
£1,000 cash award and £2,000 rent reduction if you are living inUniversity-managed accommodation *
or
£3,000 cash award if you are not living in University-managed accommodation*
* Please note Abacus House is not University managed.

If your qualification is listed below and you achieve the minimum gradeslisted you will be automatically awarded the Sussex Excellence Scholarship.There is no separate application form.
Qualifications not listed above
If you are taking other qualification, and are achieving outstandingresults, you can apply for one of 10 additional scholarships. Selection will bebased on academic merit. The successful students will be taking qualificationsequivalent to British A levels and be achieving very high grades (ie. it isexpected that those awarded the scholarship will be achieving results withinapproximately the top 10% of results for that qualification.
Past recipients of these bonus scholarships have been taking qualificationslike the Access to HE Diploma, the Polish Świadectwo Dojrzałości (Certificate ofMaturity) and the Malaysian Unified Examination Certificate

Applications will open on Wednesday 1st February 2017 and the deadline forapplying is Monday 3rd April 2017.

Scholarship payments
Students in University Accommodation
The rent reduction will be applied at the start of Year One of a three orfour year undergraduate degree. The cash award will be paid in two instalmentsof £500 in Year One, with the first instalment paid in November and the secondin March.
Students in Privately Rented Accommodation
The cash award will be paid in two installments of £1,500 in year one, withthe first instalment paid in November and the second in March.

You will automatically be awarded the Sussex Excellence Scholarship if youhave achieved the required scholarship threshold in one of the eligible academicqualifications:
*All subject areas are eligible except Brighton and Sussex Medical School(BSMS) degrees.
You must have accepted the University of Sussex as your firm choice.
The Sussex Excellence Scholarship can be combined with other University ofSussex awards.
You must have, or obtain, a UK bank account, and the details of thisaccount must be added to your Sussex Direct profile, in order to receivepayment.
