International First-Year Student Admission
Admission requirements for international first-year applicants depend onwhether you attend high school inside or outside of the United States. If YouAttended High School Outside the United States,you must meet the followingrequirements for admission:
Completion of academic upper secondary school (generally a total of 12-13years of primary and secondary education)
A corresponding secondary school diploma or leaving certificate
Above-average grades in a secondary school program that isuniversity-preparatory in nature
Completion of our Minimum High School Course Requirements, which varydepending on whether you are applying to the College of Liberal Arts andSciences, Engineering, Business, or Nursing.
Satisfaction of our English Proficiency Requirements
SAT or ACT scores are not required of international applicants whocompleted secondary school outside the United States; however, SAT or ACT scoresare required of first-year applicants who wish to be considered for academic andathletic scholarships, admission to the College of Engineering, Direct Admissionto the Tippie College of Business, the Early Decision Program to the College ofNursing, or for the University of Iowa Honors Program.
SAT and ACT scores also can be used to satisfy the university’s Englishproficiency requirements.
The university encourages all applicants to take either exam, as strongresults could favorably affect the decision regarding your application.

*Liberal Arts and Sciences students must complete 4 years in a singlelanguage to graduate from the university; Business students must complete 4years in one language or 2 years each in two languages. Students who have takenthe requisite years in high school have fulfilled these requirements.Engineering students must complete 2 years in a single language which meets boththe admission and graduation requirement.
Course requirements for international applicants from secondary/highschools outside of the US are not strictly counted. It is understood thatworldwide curriculums vary widely, so evaluators of non-US transcripts willconsider the educational system of each applicant and review holistically.

2.English Proficiency Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English must submit results of theTest of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for admission to the university.Some alternatives to the TOEFL are accepted, as described below.

NOTE: For students (early admission or transfer) who are new to theUniversity of Iowa and admitted directly to the College of Nursing as apre-licensure BSN student, a score of 100 on the iBT TOEFL is required.
English Proficiency Evaluation—Admitted students will also need to take anon-campus English Proficiency Evaluation unless they have a TOEFL score of 100or higher on the iBT or 600 or higher on the PBT.
The University of Iowa takes cases of TOEFL fraud very seriously, as doesthe Department of Homeland Security. When the university is notified that astudent’s TOEFL score has been invalidated and the Educational Testing Servicescompany confirms that it was not due to an administrative error, the universitywill take immediate steps to address the issue. This may include cancellation ofthe student’s admission and termination of the student immigration record, inwhich case the student must leave the U.S. immediately. The Department ofHomeland Security will also be notified; TOEFL fraud is considered visa fraud,and may impact a student’s ability to obtain a new U.S. visa in the future.

Required English Proficiency Evaluation—Admitted students who submit ACT,SAT, IELTS, and PTE scores instead of TOEFL scores will be required to take anon-campus English Proficiency Evaluation.

Conditional Admission
Students whose scores do not meet the minimum scores on the TOEFL (or thealternative tests) but are otherwise academically admissible may be grantedconditional admission to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Scores mustfall within the following ranges to be considered for conditional admission:
TOEFL (IBT) scores of 54-79
TOEFL (PBT) scores of 450-529
IELTS 4.5 with no subscore less than 4.0
To apply for conditional admission, applicants should submit theApplication for Admission, and provide the required official transcripts andcurrent TOEFL or IELTS scores. Evaluators in the Admissions Office will referqualified candidates for conditional admission to our Iowa Intensive EnglishProgram (IIEP) for final selection based on available seats. Conditionallyadmitted students will be provided with a letter of admission and I-20 from theIIEP after a required financial guarantee and a copy of your passport aresubmitted. A very limited number of conditional admissions can be offered eachterm.
