To be eligible for a New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarship (NZIDRS), applicants must meet the requirements for entry into a research-based doctoral degree programme at a New Zealand university and comply with the eligibility criteria of the scholarships. The scholarships provide financial support for international students wishing to undertake doctoral degrees by research in New Zealand universities. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and a set of selection criteria.

Landcare Research PhD Scholarship in Soil Physics
S-map is a major research initiative for New Zealand, developing a digital soil map and information system for New Zealand soils. Reliable and accurate information on soil water attributes is essential information that S-map needs to supply, to support decision making around a number of pertinent national issues such as containment loss from land, irrigation design and management, and land disposal of effluent.
As part of a wider research team working on the S-map initiative, a PhD scholarship will be awarded to advance understanding in a research gap on how soil management practices affect soil hydrological properties, and how this dynamic change can be incorporated into the S-map soil information system. The aim of this PhD project will be to quantify and model the dynamic response of soil hydrological properties under a selected set of management practices. Management practices could include the effect of water and effluent irrigation, animal treading, and artificial subsoil drainage.

Lincoln University Dryland Pastures Summer Scholarship
Two Summer scholarships are available to assist with field work, data collection, manuscript preparation and technology transfer. These will be based at Lincoln University and the dryland Ashley Dene farm. Applicants will be expected to complete a written report on their work and provide a short oral presentation to the dryland pastures group on the relevance of their work to dryland farmers in New Zealand.

The Agriculture and Life Sciences Faculty will be offering a number of summer research scholarships over the summer vacation, valued at $6,000 each (tax free), commencing after the end of the second semester, for a period of 12 working weeks (includes 2 weeks University Christmas close down period). Payments will be made fortnightly, with a final payment paid on receipt of your approved project report, at the completion of the 12 weeks. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic merit.

New Zealand Scholarship- Commonwealth
Commonwealth Scholarships provide the opportunity for individuals from selected developing Commonwealth countries to undertake postgraduate study or research at one of the eight universities in New Zealand. Approximately 10 new Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded each year by the New Zealand Government. The Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme is funded by the New Zealand Government’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) programme. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), delivers the scheme through the New Zealand Aid Programme. As with other New Zealand Aid Programme funded scholarships, Commonwealth Scholarships play an important role in addressing the human resource development needs of developing countries. The scholarships are awarded to candidates of strong academic merit who are expected to make a significant contribution to the development of their home country following completion of their scholarship.
