二、历史沿革

Within this context, the Department of Architecture (D-ARCH) is one of the most highly regarded faculties of architecture in the world. It owes its prominent position to both the high quality of the teaching and the outstanding results of the research. This well-established approach to teaching and research, representing a long tradition, manifests itself in the structure of flexible design studios that work in close cooperation with the institutes, and it is experienced throughout all phases of Bachelor and Master studies at the D-ARCH as a holistic and open programme.
As the most important foundation for the Swiss building tradition, the architectural education owes its success to the fruitful intertwining of the teaching staff’s academic instruction and practical building activity. In its essential significance for the teaching at the D-ARCH, the experience gained by faculty members in their own architectural practices has a long tradition that goes back to the first director of the architecture faculty at ETH Zurich, the prominent intellectual architect and theorist Gottfried Semper.
The teaching of design and construction draws its central impulses from building praxis as well as in-house research. Questions of building praxis and their validation in the context of the built environment, taken together with knowledge gained from basic research, combine to become inseparable themes of architectural education.

Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering
It currently includes 17 professors with expertise in experimental Biology, Theory, Biotechnology, Biophysics, and Microelectronics. The department is still expanding to its full capacity of 20 professors and research groups.
Our Mission
Research in the area of life sciences has moved beyond simply describing plants and animals. As more detailed information and new technologies become available, the gained knowledge will lead to scientific discoveries, but it also will be used to improve the world as we know it. The D-BSSE aims to be at the forefront of this development, which exploits biological findings and uses them as a basis for development in areas such as medicine, pharmacology, and improvement of public health.
In order to achieve this goal the D-BSSE is committed to educating the next generation of life scientists. The most important task here is to expose young scientists to all relevant scientific and technological disciplines to be innovative and productive. This includes exposing the students to more than Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Physics. All of these classical disciplines remain important, but must be complemented with, e.g., Engineering, Computer Science, or theoretical disciplines to provide the foundations for tackling complex scientific questions and problems. Moreover, the whole spectrum of disciplines is needed to make use of the acquired findings and to develop the respective applications.

Department of Biology
The Department of Biology is one of 16 departments at the ETH Zurich, consisting of five separate institutes and seven independent professorships that research various fields in Biology (biochemistry, structural biology, molecular and cellular biology, microbiology, molecular health sciences, systems biology and plant biology). A variety of experimental systems are used to clarify fundamental questions in biology. The research within the department revolves around the study of relationships between structure and function at all levels of biological systems. Examples of this include the dependencies of biomolecules and their ligands; the dependencies of biomolecules and cell structure; the detection processes between cells, tissues and the functioning of the entire organism.
The Department of Earth Sciences
The Department of Earth Sciences (D-ERDW) is a teaching and research entity of the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich)
The Department carries out the duties given in the Organisation Ordinance in the areas of teaching, research, and planning. It represents the main administrative unit for university staff involved in the area of Earth Sciences.
