Guidelines for International Applicants
To apply for admission, an international student must complete all theapplication requirements for first-year admission along with the followingadditional requirements: English proficiency and Financial Certification.

English Proficiency Requirements
Applicants who do not use English as their primary language mustdemonstrate the ability to be successful in a rigorous English-medium academiccurriculum. Applicants must be fluent in written and spoken English at the timethey apply to Emory University. The Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are highlyrecommended when English is not the native language of the student; however,students for whom English is not the native language may also demonstrateexceptional command of the English language through the following criteria:

A score of 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) or an overall band scoreof 7.5 on the IELTS is expected for all applicants. These scores are not used ascut-offs and review of English language proficiency is viewed in the context ofeach application. The highest total score of a single sitting will be used ifthe student elects to take an exam more than once. Students are also encouragedto take the optional Writing section of the SAT or ACT exam to demonstrateEnglish proficiency.
The review of all applicants is holistic and close attention will be paidto the strength of the high school curriculum, achievement in the classroom overtime, and standardized exam results.

Financial Certification
As an international applicant, you are required to certify that you havesufficient funds to cover your expenses while attending Emory University. Youwill need to download a copy of the International/Financial Certification form(FIF), which should be completed and returned to the Office of Admission. Wealso will accept a note or statement from your bank or financial institution asproof of sufficient funding.

If you have been issued a resident alien registration number (permanentresidency or green card) since sending in your application, you will need tosend a copy of it to our office to change your status. If you have applied forpermanent residency status but have not yet received your green card, you stillwill need to fill out the financial form and send in a copy of your permanentresidency application. If you have further questions concerning the FIF or thestatus of your file, or if you are on any other type of visa (such as E, H, orL), which may not require you to be issued an I-20, please contact ouroffice.
These requirements should be sent as attached PDFs. Please make sure toinclude the applicant's full name, date of birth, and application ID.
